X (2022) - Review

X is a solid throwback to the slashers of the 70’s, and has some substance to back it up. The film is sleazy in all the ways a slasher can be, so much so I’m worried to show any footage. It isn’t gross or exploitive in any way, and the film explores the ideas around sex as well. Worth is a through line in every character in the film, even the killers themselves, and it’s interesting to watch. But once the kills starts, I was kinda underwhelmed. Those themes explored early are kinda dropped or become surface-level. And the kills themselves are fine, nothing super crazy. The editing throughout the film, especially for certain kills, were unique, I dug that. Overall, the film tries to elevate the throwback slasher, and it somewhat succeeds in doing that.
