Werewolf at Night (2022) - Review
Werewolf at Night was pretty great, especially in the direction and the aesthetics. Who knew Michael Giacchino had this in him. His direction was really, really solid. Some great camera movements, some great imagery that he used here. I love all the additions of imperfections in the film grain how there was almost cigarette burns and burns in the film as it went along. I love all of the scratches to it. I love how kind of empty the soundscape is. If you go back and watch a lot of universal Monster movies, you notice how kind of empty the soundscape is in the movie. And this film captures that a lot. It captures this esthetic of this monster movie so well. The characters here are pretty fun too. The action is pretty fun. My biggest complaint here is I really, really wish it was longer. There's a lot of themes explored about who you're supposed to be and family that really doesn't get followed through to the end. I feel like if this was originally a feature length movie, this theme would have been explored there. Also, there's a lot of little moments with some of the hunters. I feel like there used to be a little bit more of an ensemble here, which is a shame because a lot of these shows and the special really get a lot of missed potential by not being what they're originally created to be, which was movies. I really hope this is a step forward for more creativity and more of an allowance of vision in the future of the MCU.
