Val (2021) - Review
A documentary that matches its sincerity, its weirdness and its commitment to ‘real’ with its subject. Val Kilmer is someone artistic, some genuine, and someone who holds artistic integrity above all. The documentary explores how his personality developed, how people misinterpreted this passion for arrogance, and how it seems lost due to cancer. There’s something so raw about this documentary, mainly due to all the footage Val shot himself of his personal life. I wish it focused more on his personal and definitely his later life, because his “life story” really didn’t get interesting until the “Batman: Forever” segment, but overall this is a engaging and emotional documentary about self-expression and who Val Kilmer really is.
