Gangs of New York (2002) - Review

This film thrives on brilliant direction and top-notch production value, but by the end it does feel like Scorsese trying to do too much at once. All it is great when isolated scene-to-scene, or sequence-to-sequence, but as a whole it feels like the payoff is kinda mixed. The main storyline between Bill and Amsterdam is excellent, but Cameron Diaz hardly had a character. She was great, and her and Leo’s chemistry was good, but by the end we know nothing about her. The last 30 minutes feel so far removed from the rest of the movie, which I think was mainly due to a real life tragedy (yes, the one you are thinking of). Despite the rushed feeling, the sequence was great and resonant. But there is too much ingredients in this film smoothie.
