tick, tick… Boom! (2021) - Review

tick, tick… Boom! is a creative, energetic and really emotional movie musical. This film has everything going for it. Great musical numbers that are memorable and catchy. Great acting from Andrew Garfield in the supporting cast. And it all comes together to create a great homage and tribute to Jonathan Larson. It's one of the best films I've seen about the struggling artist, about how they survive day by day, how they struggle to get their art out there. Yes, that does hit home personally for me, but I think it is universal. Everyone feels like they might not be doing enough and through this film is so cathartic to see Jonathan Larson finally learn that, yes, he's enough and he's doing okay. The cinematography and the set pieces here are great. It looks beautiful. The energy is kinetic and some of the set pieces and sequences and choreography here are incredible. The only moment for me that doesn't 100% work for me is the therapy section. Not like a therapy session. I mean, like the section of the movie that has the therapy song in it. I feel like the juxtaposition between the song that's actually played and the scene, it's over just don't work. And they don't flesh together well enough because you're still supposed to take the scene seriously, but the movie is actively making fun of it, so I feel like in that part it's just confused of what it's going for. Even if the tiny things don't work for me, this film just hits and right at home for me.
