The Sea Beast (2022) - Review

The Sea Beast is a pleasant surprise. I thought this film was going to be a How to Train Your Dragon rip-off, and while this film apes a lot off of that film, this movie does some things to differentiate itself. First off, the animation is beautiful. Water, smoke, rubble, sea monsters, it all looks beautiful. The action is also surprisingly well choreographed, with great geography, clarity and creativity on how these hunters battle this creatures. Compared to HTTYD’s theme of “these creatures don’t mean harm”, this film’s tale centres on the idea of the main conflict between human and sea beast being a facade created by the upper class to control the rhetoric and the common folk. Yeah, it’s surprisingly adult, and it’s interesting to watch how the film explores this concept with its characters. This animated film successfully separates itself from the tropes of its storylines, and it’s a great watch as well.
