Not Okay (2022) - Review
Not Okay describes itself best in its opening warnings: “flashing lights, themes of trauma, and an unlikable female protagonist”. Right away, you understand the tone of the film, and the film mostly sticks the landing. As the opening texts signal, the film is satirically hilarious, making fun of social media and the influencers within it. Zoey Deutch nails ever comedic moment given, playing this vapid and clueless person so well. She also gives the necessary depth to help us actually empathize with this film as it goes along. And that’s where the film falls short. The film falls into a predicable formula, the classic “misunderstanding” plot line that many animated films use. You can tell where the film is going the whole time, and while the predictable beats work well, it clashes with the satirical and subversive style that the film has. Despite this clash between subversive and cookie-cutter, Not Okay is a more than okay film, delivering a film with tons of great style and humour that outshine its flaws.
