Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) - Review
Sam Raimi returns to superhero filmmaking with a bang, delivering visceral sequences, great characterization and visual storytelling. The instant the movie starts you can feel the energy, you can see the style. Sam Raimi’s choices in editing, camera movements, and music are unique and brilliantly singular to his vision. And more important than any of that, those choices serve the characters! This movie is about fear and learning to let go, so of course sequences of horror make sense. The editing showcases a character’s perspective in a certain situation, showing how hurt they are. The amazing POV shots show how frightening characters are to others. It is storytelling through the filmmaking that we often don’t see through these Marvel movies.
Speaking of characters, they’re great. Wanda is wonderful as she struggles with her lost love. Strange feels guilty about his decisions in Infinity War and learns to give up control and let others make decisions for themselves. America Chavez is also a character driven by fear and learns to overcome it. And the cameos that are present in the film are there to showcase the villains threat rather than fan service! AMAZING!
I can’t wait to watch this movie again, due to its excellent sequences, great pace, simple story and rip-roaring blockbuster energy. Sam Raimi shows us how it is done, and I can’t wait for people to hate it so we get more generic and fan service centric films!
