Deep Cover (1992) - Review
Deep Cover is a film choke full of style, but it didn’t work 100% of the time for me. There’s a focus on crime, the role of the police, and the war on drugs, and the film explores these subjects pretty well. The main performance from Lawrence Fishburne was great, he is cold and calculated at times, but also emotional when necessary. While the style of cutting between different vocal lengths and other unique choices help it stand out, some of beats just didn’t work for me. The beginning especially, is so poorly directed and edited that it probably made me offput for the rest of the film. The story felt rushed, not giving enough time to establish the stakes and the other characters. Plus, hot take possibly, but Jeff Goldblum was miscast. Overall, a solid crime film with a standout style, even if it falls short sometimes.
